Summer and Winter: The Weave
The Summer and Winter weave is believed to have originated in Finland and was popular during the Colonial American period. The pattern is reversible with one side being predominantly dark and the other side mostly light. Traditionally the light side of the fabric was used in the summer and the dark side of the fabric was used in the winter, hence the name Summer and Winter. It creates a beautifully textured fabric as well as being reversible. The Summer and Winter weave is a multiharness weave which requires four or more harnesses. Handweaver.com original designs require four to fifteen harnesses depending on the pattern being used to create the textiles.
All of Handweaver.com textiles are woven in the Summer and Winter weave except the napkins. The napkins are woven in a tabby or plain weave which produces a lighter weight fabric with more drape to the fabric. The pattern is the same on both sides.
